Boneshaker - Zombie Book by Cherie Priest

Boneshaker by Cherie Priest is a steampunk take on zombie outbreak fiction – an interesting twist on your typical zombie books. The zombies aren’t strictly zombies, they are instead called ‘rotters’, and it’s not entirely clear whether being bitten causes someone to become a ‘rotter’ or just die.

The book is set in gold rush era Seattle with some chronological inconsistencies the author recognizes herself. The atmosphere is excellent and the steampunk aspects are fun but not described well enough to make them completely believable, and while I enjoyed the genre mash-up, I thought the zombie element was downplayed to the point where it seemed totally secondary.

I did find myself surprised by a rewarding twist at the end, but wish the rest of the novel was more fleshed out. Worth the read, but I expect more from Priest’s next book.
